The Omega's SSRL series of solid state relays are used to control large resistance heaters in conjunction with temperature controllers. Solid state relays are SPST, normally open switching devices with no moving parts, capable of millions of cycles of operation. By applying a control signal, an SSR switches ON the ac load current, just as the moving contacts do on a mechanical contactor. Three-phase loads can be controlled using 2 or 3 SSR’s. Use 3 SSR’s for Y or star 3-phase loads using a neutral line. Two SSR’s will control “delta” loads with no neutral line. Three solid state relays are also used when there is no neutral load to provide redundancy and extra assurance of control.

'Switching' takes place at the zero voltage crossover point of the alternating current cycle. Because of this, no appreciable electrical noise is generated, making SSR’s ideal for environments where there are apparatuses susceptible to RFI.

These SSR’s are of the twin SCR type, inherently more reliable and capable of higher overloads before failure than triacs. Heat is developed in a solid state relay due to the nominal voltage drop across the switching device. To dissipate the heat, an SSR must be mounted on a finned heat sink or aluminum plate. An SSR should be located where the ambient temperature is relatively low, since the current switching rating is lowered as the temperature increases. Another SSR characteristic is a small leakage current across the output when the relay is open. Because of this, a voltage will always exist on the load side of the device.

In comparing SSR’s with mechanical contactors, the SSR has a cycle life many times that of a comparably priced contactor. However, SSR’s are more prone to failure due to overload and improper initial wiring. Solid state relays can fail, contact closed, on overload circuits. It is essential that a properly rated, fast blowing I2T fuse be installed to protect the load circuit.

Finned heat sinks are anodized fabrications that come complete with tapped mounting holes and screws. See thermal rating curves and ordering instructions for proper selection.

All SSRL series relays come with a thermally conductive pad mounted on the baseplate. This will significantly improve the thermal conductivity between the heat sink and SSR baseplate. It is also suggested that 10-inch-pounds of torque be used on the SSR mounting screws.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Defective I spoke with one of your engineers and was advised to purchase this model of the solid state relay. When I received it I found it would not do anything. I took one off another heat treat furnace and it worked. I contacted Allen Courtney. Because I failed to write down the name of the engineer he refused to replace it or give a refund. Lost a customer.

I want to use this relay to power a 120v ac electric horn, with a 12v battery input. I’m running the 120v ac through an inverter, so will the 12v trigger work on this relay to power horn on and off?

Can I connect a CN4116-DC1-DC2 PID controller to a SSRL240DC10 solid state relay to control a 100 W 120 V MB1A1A1A1 band heater? Wire connections between the SSR and PID consist of HW3051-5-100 20 AWG wire. Thank you.

The CN4116-DC1-DC2 PID controller has DC Pulse outputs that are compatible with the dc input SSRL240DC10 solid state relay which can control the MB1A1A1A1, 100 W 120 V heater. All items including the HW3051-5-100 wire are compatible and are properly rated. Please follow the wiring instructions included in the related operator's manuals. You will also require a thermocouple or RTD temperature sensor to complete the system.

Can I use this relay to power a 1/2 hp submersible pump? Thanks

Perhaps. The key is to know how many 'amps' your pump will draw. Check the specifications for your pump and see what that value is. That value should always be lower than the SSR amperage specified value that you choose, but not so close as to cause a surge upon start-up. We recommend a 25% 'window'. e.g. if you choose an SSR that is 10 Amps and your load draws 9 amps, a 10 amp SSR will do, but we suggest that you move up to the next amperage in size due to any 'start-up' surges that may occur.

Does the SSRL240DC25 compatible with the PM PLUS Controller? Can I use it to control a 120V, 1000W flexible heater?

I would like to use this relay to power my AC 10Amp/115V swimming pool pump. I will use a spinkler timer 24V connection to this relay, to switch the swimming pool pump on. Can I provide 24v from the timer to the relay to support the load?

If a DC input SSR is selected it will activate with a 24 VDC signal to turn on the output. It is recommended to use an Amperage rating 3X steady state of a pump because the initial start up Current surge is significantly higher.

For the SSRL240DC25, what is the transfer function of input VDC in to output VAC out? Input 3-32VDC, Output 24-280VAC

The input and output are optically isolated so there isn't really a transfer function. The turn on time is 0.5 of the power cycle maximum at the zero cross over firing point.
