Features

The SCR19 Series Power Controllers are designed to proportion electric power to resistive loads only, such as ovens, furnaces, heat sealers, etc. (NOTE: They are not designed to drive transformers or any inductive load.) The controllers consist of power semi-conductors (SCRs), properly-sized heat sinks, trigger circuitry, and fuses supplied on panels for surface mounting. The power controller accepts a 4 to 20 mA dc output from a temperature controller or can be supplied with manual option using a remote potentiometer.

The SCR19 Series controllers offers two methods of proportional control – Zero-voltage-switched and Phase-angled-fired. With the Zero-voltage-switching mode, the controller switches on complete cycles of the ac supply voltage. The trigger circuit is designed to turn on the SCRs as close as possible to the point where the AC sine wave crosses through zero. In effect, the line voltage is turned on and off and applied to the heaters in whole cycles. With an input of 4 to 20 mA, the output will be off below 4 mA and full on at 20 mA. Proportioning action is obtained by varying the number of cycles on to the number of cycles off. The output will vary from one cycle on and nine cycles off at low input, to all cycles on at maximum input. This output is integrated by the heaters which produce a smoothly proportioning heat output that varies directly with the input signal. With the Phase-angle-fired mode, the power to the load is controlled by governing the point of turn on (firing) of each half cycle of the full AC sine wave.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Old reliable Had one in service for many years. Replaced it with this one only because the line voltage requirement changed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Eggcellent SCR packs for thermal evaporation. These controllers have performed 100% over the years I have used them. They have never failed. My application is controlling step down transformers that step 240VAC down to 0-5VAC. This allows me to deliver thousands of Amps-AC to Tungsten "boats" where pellets of metals and metallic compounds are caused to evaporate for the production of semiconductors and optical coatings. Three cheers To Omega Engineering for a fine product!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Works fine but doesn't last a long time. The unit functioned well for about 2 hours, and then failed during a critical test when the 40-amp fuse blew when loaded to approximately 22 amps. All heaters served by the unit were intact, exhibiting cold resistance readings within specification, and no sign of shorting or other failure modes. The failure necessitated extensive effort to heel-out cooled and solidified process melt, delayed the project schedule, and jeopardized the next tranche of project funding.

Can the 240V models be used at 120V? If not, is there a modification to the controller that can be made to allow it?

Asked by: JKHLOUKY
Hi JKHLOUKY, Thank you for the inquiry. The SCR19Z and the SCR39Z are rated to work at levels of 1/2 the specified voltage range. Best regards, OMEGA

SCR19Z-12-040 Fails to Supply Full Power. I load SCR19Z with 60 W light bulb. With 19.8 mA supplied control the SCR19Z produces only 1 full power line cycle in each 50 msec. This is full control giving only 1/3 available power. Is this normal?

Please contact the Temperature Engineering group to review the issue.

Any chance for a CAD model or dimensional drawing of a SCR39P-20-040-S9? I need to fit 4 in a panel and the overall dimensions are not enough information.

Asked by: MD2077
Thank you for the request. Unfortunately we do not offer CAD or other dimensional drawing. Please check manual for mounting guidelines. For cooling they require extra space air circulation. Best regards OMEGA

Can the high speed fuse be removed or replaced with a slower acting fuse? Having issues with the fuses blowing unnecessarily

Asked by: DaveA
Hi Dave High speed fuse is for equipment safety so you would need to use same rating as provided in specifications. For help with application load questions please forward note to TEMP@OMEGA.COM. Best regards OMEGA

Where can I find a mechanical drawings or 3D CAD model? I need to create a model for space planning in my system.

Asked by: Space Ball
Unfortunately Omega does not have 3D models for this to send and dimensions provided in the user's guide and on the data sheet would be the best available information.

Attempting to power a 50W heater (120V at 0.4A). When testing, the controller only seems to provide 1.2V, can you suggest any troubleshooting steps I could take. Wiring has been checked and double checked. Confused as to why at 20mA it only supplies 1.2V.

Asked by: SpaceConquest
Hi SpaceConquest, Thank you for the inquiry. Try a second light bulb in parallel or a higher wattage bulb. ( to meet the minimum load requirement). For further trouble shooting please email note to TEMP@OMEGA.COM. Best regards, OMEGA

What is the minimum load requirement?

Asked by: SpaceConquest
Thank you for your inquiry. Minimum current load is usually 10% of the rated current for the SCR.

On SCR19Z-12-040 where should the brown wire labeled "LINE 2" be connected?

Asked by: Nicknamealreadyused
Thank you for your inquiry. This is connected across the load. The manual shows this connection in the manual.
