Finding a Leak Using an Ultrasonic Flow Meter

In complex industrial piping systems, finding a leak in a single conduit can be very challenging! Luckily, there is a solution!

Let’s say you’re seeing an increase in water usage, but your process hasn’t changed. Well, that’s a sure sign that you’ve got a leak somewhere in the system. But how are you going to find that leak? Well, by using a portable ultrasonic flow meter, you can locate the leaking section of pipe quickly and non-invasively. Here’s how!

An ultrasonic flowmeter sends a pulse through the liquid inside the pipe, the pulse transit time is measured and from that value, the flow rate is calculated. Now we can compare flow rates and total flow volume at various points in the system, and where there’s a drop in the flow volume there’s likely to be a leak in that proximity. This method is non-invasive and requires no cutting of pipes.

And there you have it!
